Cycling

Brussels is a big city and for these cities it’s difficult to travel with car. There’s a big change you stuck in a traffic jam and have to pay much money to park your car, if you even can find a spot. So that’s why cycling is a good alternative. Travelling by bicycle has numerous advantages, both as regards health and mobility.  In addition, a bicycle often makes the journey quicker in urban areas, like Brussels and you will see a lot of the city.

There are currently four regional cycle routes. Two of them are routed along the redesigned rue de la Loi.  These routes will be linked to the regional greenway (which will cover the whole Region) and to cycle routes used on a daily basis in the Flemish Region. The routes can be used for cycling trips, because they are taking you outside the city. Inside the city their’s also place to ride, called communal cycle ways. A tip when you’re (very) lazy is to take the bike to a metro station and park it in the bicycles-metro parking especially for bikes. You don’t have to walk and you can sit down while finishing your trip.
For information, for example guided bike tours, maps or rental bikes you can go to Provelo. see the listing below

When you’re tired of Brussels or just want to see Belgium at his best you can do some cycle tours across Flanders or the Ardennes. Flanders offers more then 700 miles through the most beautiful countryside and small villages. There are different routes and the biggest of them is 450 kilometres. This route avoids all city centres, but runs close to the larger towns of Bruges, Antwerp, Ypres, Kortrijk, Leuven, Ghent and so on.  If you try it at once I will give you a little tip: Bring a tent or some cash for a hotel (or most likely hotels). The Ardennes offers nice nature and some mountains. Its fun to rent a mountain bike and cross the wild nature.

In order to cycle, you can use the specific network RAVeL (réseau autonome des voies lentes) that offers paths dedicated to slow users (pedestrian or cyclists) and routes in the city. You can also check some associations
