Brussels is the capital of Belgium and is also considered as the capital of Europe. Main institutions of the European Union and NATO have their headquarters in Brussels so a lot of important decisions are made in this city. It makes Brussels an international metropolis with a mosaic of languages, cultures, and traditions. About a third of its 1 million inhabitants are foreigners.
Brussels hosts a lot of sight seeing, tourist attractions, over 80 museums and good shopping facilities. The most well-known style is the Art Nouveau, represented especially by the famous architect Victor Horta. Horta put an architectural stamp on Brussels like Gaudi did with Barcelona. The Art Nouveau style was popular in Europe, and especially in Brussels, between 1893 and 1918. The city can be roughly divided into the "High Town" (the south-east part), which is the richest with many splendid villa's and parcs, and the "Low Town" where you can find most of the Art Nouveau style. The buildings are often in a rather bad shape, but it is the oldest and most picturesque part of town. This part is formed around the Grand Place which is the starting point for any visit to Brussels.
